As part of the Green Livelihoods Alliance Project being implemented by Friends of the Earth Ghana, we are training local community members in the Kwaebibirim District in the Eastern Region of Ghana. This activity is very essential because a visit to the Kade landscape and interactions with local community members reveals several environmental and human right abuses being faced by the communities. The challenge has been how to monitor and to document these challenges in order to be able to seek redress using credible and verified evidence. This training is to enhance local community members capacity to use a mobile application in the monitoring and documentation of environmental and human rights violations in the landscape. The data gathered will then be used in targeting the responsible institutions in helping to address the challenges of the local community people. Friends of the Earth Ghana through its Timby Project will therefore seek to do the following specifically:
•Build communities’ capacities to report infractions on their lands, environmental and social impacts of oil palm plantation activities using Real Time Monitoring
•Empower communities to be able to demand their negotiated compensations and to understand the Free Prior Informed Consent (FPIC) processes prior to further exploitation in their landscape.
. Evidenced based data provided will be used for lobby and advocacy purposes to ensure the rights of local community people are respected.
